Fridges and fridge freezers

Top mount, bottom mount, side by side and french door. The everyday fridge, and the one you notice within an hour of it going warm.

  • Thermostats, sensors and controls
  • Fan motors and defrost systems
  • Door seals, hinges and drainage

Freezers

Chest freezers, upright freezers, and the second freezer out in the garage. Usually the last thing anyone thinks to check, and the most expensive one to get wrong.

  • Thermostats and temperature control
  • Defrost elements and timers
  • Lids, seals and door alarms

Built-in and integrated fridges

The ones fitted into the cabinetry, where replacing the appliance means a joiner as well. We work on them in place, so the kitchen stays in one piece.

  • Repaired where they sit, nothing removed
  • Electronic controls and displays
  • Fans, sensors and seals

Common fridge and freezer faults we fix

A fridge that has stopped cooling is not always a dead fridge. Most of what we see is one part doing its job badly, and most of those parts are already in the van.

Not cooling or not cold enough

The call we get most. Before anyone starts pricing a new fridge, it is worth checking the fan, the defrost system and the thermostat, because a fridge that has stopped cooling is very often one failed part away from working again.

Temperature irregularities

Milk freezing at the back of the fridge, or ice cream going soft in the freezer. Usually a sensor, a thermostat or a damper that is no longer reading or moving the way it should.

Frost build-up or excessive freezing

A sheet of ice down the back of the freezer, or frost creeping over everything in it. That is the defrost system: element, timer or sensor. Left alone it blocks the airflow, and then the fridge side starts warming up too.

Noisy or vibrating operation

Rattles, buzzing, or a hum that has changed pitch. Fan motors and their mounts are the usual cause. A noise that is new is worth looking at while it is still just a noise.

Damaged condenser coils

The coils shed the heat, so when they are damaged, packed with dust or crushed up against a wall, the fridge runs hotter and works harder for a worse result. Often one of the cheaper things on this list to put right.

Faulty thermostat

The part that tells the fridge when to run. When it fails, the fridge either never stops or never starts, and both of those feel like a much bigger problem than they are.

Faulty fan motors

Most modern fridges move cold air around with a fan. When the fan gives up, the freezer usually stays cold while the fridge slowly warms. That split is a useful clue, and it is a common repair.

Water leaks

Water in the crisper, under the drawers, or on the kitchen floor. Nearly always a blocked defrost drain, a perished door seal, or a split water line on a plumbed model.

Electrical faults

A fridge that will not start, throws an error code, or trips the safety switch. Your technician is a licensed electrician as well as an appliance repairer, so the appliance and the circuit both get checked.

Knowing when a fridge is worth fixing

Fridges are the appliance where the repair-or-replace question is hardest, and where people get told the wrong thing most often.

Most fridge faults have nothing to do with the sealed refrigeration system. They are thermostats, sensors, fan motors, defrost elements, control boards, door seals, and condenser coils that need cleaning out. Every one of those is a repair, most of them are parts we carry, and most of them cost a fraction of what a new fridge costs.

The sealed system is the exception. When a compressor has failed or the refrigerant has gone, the sums usually stop working on an ordinary domestic fridge, and you are better off putting the money towards a replacement.

Being qualified in refrigeration is what lets us tell you which of the two you are looking at, rather than guessing. If your fridge is worth fixing, we will fix it. If it is not, you will hear that before you have spent anything.

Your technician is a licensed electrician and an ARCtick certified refrigeration and air conditioning technician. That is the qualification behind an honest read on a fridge, and behind our air conditioning work.

Fridge and freezer brands we repair

We are an independent repairer, so the brand is rarely the problem.

Bosch
Miele
Electrolux
Fisher & Paykel
LG
Samsung
Hisense
Westinghouse
Haier

And every other major brand sold in Australia. Bosch and Miele fridges are built to be repaired and they hold their value, which is why we carry parts for them. More on Miele repairs and Bosch repairs, or see every appliance we repair on the Central Coast.

What happens when you call

1

Tell us what it's doing

Ring 0410 441 205, seven days, 7am to 7pm. Tell us the brand, whether it is the fridge side, the freezer side or both, and what you are seeing. You will speak to the technician, and we will tell you the service call fee straight up.

2

Get a real time, not a maybe

We will tell you when we can be there while you are still on the phone. A warming fridge is not something to leave hanging, so if we are booked out we will say so rather than string you along.

3

We come to the fridge

We repair fridges and freezers where they stand, built-in and integrated units included. Nothing gets pulled out and carted off to a workshop.

4

Back cold, backed in writing

Every repair carries our 12 month warranty on parts and labour. If the same fault comes back, so do we.

Fridge and freezer repair FAQs

What does a fridge repair cost on the Central Coast?

We charge a service call fee and we will tell you exactly what it is when you ring, before we come out. Parts and labour are quoted before any work starts. Because we carry thermostats, sensors, fan motors and seals, most fridges are sorted in one visit rather than two.

Why is my fridge not cooling but the freezer is still cold?

This is the most useful symptom you can give us over the phone. On most modern fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown through to the fridge by a fan. When the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms up, the problem is usually that fan, or a defrost fault blocking the path the air travels.

Why does my freezer keep icing up?

Either the defrost system has stopped doing its job, or warm air is getting in past a door seal and freezing when it lands. Both are repairs. Chipping the ice out only buys you a few weeks, because the ice is the symptom rather than the fault.

Do you repair freezers as well as fridges?

Yes. Chest freezers, upright freezers, and standalone freezers in the garage or laundry, alongside the freezer side of any fridge freezer. Same parts, same faults, and the same in home repair.

Is it worth repairing a fridge or should I replace it?

It depends entirely on which part has failed, and that is worth knowing before you decide. Thermostats, fans, sensors, defrost elements, seals and control boards are all repairs, and all of them cost far less than a new fridge. Where the sealed refrigeration system has failed, the sums usually favour replacing, and we will tell you that straight rather than sell you a repair.

Do you repair built-in and integrated fridges?

Yes, and we repair them where they sit. Integrated fridges are expensive to replace because the cabinetry has been built around them, which makes them well worth repairing.

How quickly can you get to me?

Ring us and you will know before you hang up. We answer the phone seven days, 7am to 7pm, and repairs are booked Monday to Friday. If we cannot get to you as fast as you need, we will say so on the call rather than leave you waiting on a fridge full of food.

Which suburbs do you cover?

We repair fridges and freezers in homes across the Central Coast, including Gosford, Erina, Terrigal, Woy Woy, Umina Beach and the surrounding suburbs, from Patonga in the south to Berkeley Vale in the north and Somersby in the west.
